According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, of which nearly 100% of all diagnosed cases are either basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or melanoma. To learn more about incidence, survival and mortality rates, in addition to risk factors, prevention and detection, view the American Academy of Dermatology's skin cancer fact sheet. Since exposure to ultraviolet light is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, it is important to protect yourself by always using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and finding shade. It is recommended that everyone perform regular skin self-exams to check for signs of skin cancer and to alert your dermatologist if you observe anything suspicious.
